Gleeble® Systems:  The Standard for Thermal-Mechanical Physical Simulation

Gleeble systems are available in several models, each with a wide variety of available options and configurations. The most popular machines are the Gleeble 3180, Gleeble 3500 and Gleeble 3800. Mobile Conversion Units (MCUs) are available for 3500 and 3800 series which provide application specific capabilities. MCUs include the Hydrawedge II, MAXStrain II, Hot Torsion System and the new Large Sample Strip Annealing Simulation system. DSI also manufacturers the ISO-Q Quenching and Deformation Dilatometer specifically designed to generate CCT and TTT diagrams and study phase transformation kinetics. DSI offers the HDS-V40, a highly specialized machine used to simulate direct rolling, from the continuous caster to the end of the hot rolling process, all in one continuous sequence.  

This flexibility allows the tailoring of a Gleeble system to meet your exact testing requirements. 



Dynamic Systems Inc. (DSI) designs and manufactures equipment for dynamic thermal-mechanical testing of materials and physical simulation of processes. Typically, a sample of material is heated and mechanically worked while various performance parameters of interest are measured and recorded for later analysis. The most widely known machine produced by DSI for physical simulation is the Gleeble® System. These machines typically have a high speed heating system, a servo hydraulic system and a computer control and data acquisition system.


PHYSICAL SIMULATION OF METALLURGICAL PROCESSES

Physical modeling technologies have developed significantly over recent years with the increasing pressure on researchers for new materials and lower production costs. As a result, physical simulation systems have become more capable, accurate, and efficient with higher deformation speeds, more complex stress states, more flexibility in functions, along with easier programming and operation. Computer modeling is applied more in materials thermo-mechanical processing owing to the development of computation technology. However, it must rely on physical modeling and simulation, which provides essential physical property data, boundary conditions, and even validation of a computer model itself.

The Gleeble 3500 System
The Gleeble 3500 is the industry standard for physical simulation of thermal mechanical processes. With its high speed heating and wide range of mechanical capabilities the Gleeble 3500 provides capabilities for high speed compression and tension testing, multi-hit hot deformation tests, melting and solidification, and strip annealing.

The Gleeble 3800 System
The most powerful Gleeble available, the Gleeble 3800 mechanical system, is capable of exerting as much as 20 tons of static force in compression or 10 tons in tension. Stroke rates as fast as 2000 mm/second can be achieved. This system can be equipped for the same applications as a Gleeble 3500 however it is particularly well suited for multi-hit hot deformation simulations. The additional force available with this model provides the ability to test larger samples, stronger materials, and at lower temperatures.
